As if the arrival of their brilliant new album ‘Awesome Science’ wasn’t enough, Humanfly have decided to treat their Leeds based fans to an evening of brilliant local live heaviness to celebrate the album’s release. First up are Himself. Quite what inspired the off the wall nature of this Yorkshire quintet is, as yet, unknown, but there is no doubting their serial oddness. Musically they mostly stay around a less travelled midpoint between searingly heavy post-metal and seriously batty noise rock. The vocals veer between group harmony and seriously strange spoken word (in a Yorkshire accent, obviously). Nobody knows quite what to make of it, but it’s different if nothing else.
 Monster Killed by Laser are clear Goblin apers but frankly the world is always in need of a band that can rival the Italian legends for space rock genius. The addition of Pulled Apart by Horses bassist Robert Lee will hopefully result in the band getting some more attention, as they have been plying their excellent furrow for too long now without anyone seeming to notice. The same could be said for Bilge Pump but their lo-fi Dinosaur Jr. / Shellac stylings don’t seem to be intended for any audience bigger than that of The Brudenell Social Club. One senses that the trio just love making a racket occasionally, and for that we should all be grateful as this set confirms once again that, apart from Future of the Left, they may well be Britain’s best noise rock band right now.
By this stage in proceedings everything is running very late, around forty-five minutes late to be precise, that means that non-Leeds attendees such as your humble reviewer are robbed of all but the opening salvo of Humanfly’s set. As expected the band sound colossal, and the new material from ‘Awesome Science’ only seems to have enhanced the crushing dynamic interplay that has always been the band’s foremost talent. A shame not to have seen more of them, but then their ability is far from in doubt. The opportunity to watch four great bands in one evening should be enough solace.
