The decision by the English Football Association to choose smooth indie band Embrace to record the nations official World Cup anthem seems to have backfired.
'World At Your Feet' was premiered on radio last week, and as since been slated by football and music fans alike for lacking passion and "chantability".
Although fans agree on one thing, lead singer Danny McNamara has written a good pop tune.
One fan told BBC Radio 1: "The embrace song is a good song but its not a football anthem. For a normal chart release it would be good but it was meant to be a football anthem. Its nowhere near as good as three lions and previous football anthems."
Another summed up the mood of the nation with: "The key to any footie anthem is can/will it be sung on the terraces. Embrace are deluded if they really think this is a winner. I'd expect this on an Embrace album but not as a headline anthem for the world's most important sporting event."
Speaking last week Danny defended the track by saying: "I didn't want to get into the offside rule or Bobby Charlton. I wanted to write something a bit more universal"
Embrace have a high standard to live up to, with previous World Cup songs 'Three Lions' and New Orders' 'World In Motion' becoming terrace favourites. Only time will tell if this song manages to find some 'universal' success, or if it will be overtaken by a rival tune and quickly forgotten.
'World At Your Feet' is released on 5th June. If you haven't heard it yet, you can judge for yourself here.
