Circus Envy - A New Dawn - (EP Review)

Circus Envy are a five piece folk band from Hull. Their EP, A New Dawn, is a collection of five soft, acoustic tracks which feature guest performances by BBC Folk Award nominees Hannah James and Sam Sweeney.

The group are currently playing across the North of England, including a slot at Beverley Folk Festival, with a tour to follow in Autumn. They are also currently busy with a project for The BBC, with renowned composer, Benjamin Till.

This EP is by no means destined for mainstream popularity or commercial success, it is however a wonderfully composed display of acoustic instruments and vocals, including the more unusual bouzouki, mandolin and cajon alongside very well played percussion and guitar.

ImageAn EP which is very easy to listen to, yet lively enough to provoke some toe tapping, there is a definite feel of The Eagles, to the title track, A New Dawn and the second track, Going Nowhere. The dramatic instruments and fantastic strummed guitar, during A New Dawn provide an atmospheric backdrop to the track and there is a definite soothing, calmness to the last track, The Night Draws Closer, which is a beautiful ballad.

Three Score And Ten, is a particular highlight, it is a very traditional folk song, lively and filled with the most beautiful use of acoustic instruments and vocals. The track’s lyrics are very loyal to the East Yorkshire roots of this band and I am positive that this track would be a winner at any festival, during the mid afternoon sun. It is little wonder this track has featured on Radio 2’s Mike Harding show.

A New Dawn, is a very well written and composed collection of excellent, traditional folk songs given an injection of liveliness and a modern edge to lift each track just enough to make it an EP which stands out from the norm.
