Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex to Relaunch Solo Career with New Album

Poly Styrene, the former frontwoman of ‘70s punk band X-Ray Spex, is to relaunch her solo career with a new album entitled ‘Generation Indigo’, due for in March 2011. Poly has worked with producer Youth on the album, which will be her first solo effort since 2004’s ‘Flower Aeroplane’.

‘Generation Indigo’ will be preceded by a single ‘Black Christmas’ on 20th December, which will be released as a free download. The track is written and performed by Poly with her daughter Celeste.

The album is described as “taking in everything from power pop to neo-X-Ray Spex punk rock to Trojan-reggae infused grooves.”

X-Ray Spex were among the first London-based punk groups during the ‘70s and their album ‘Germ Free Adolescents’ has become known as one of the best albums of that era. The band split in 1979 and Poly went on to release a solo album entitled ‘Translucence’ in 1980. X-Ray Spex have reformed on a number of occasions, including a sell-out date at London’s Roundhouse in 2008, when they played ‘Germ Free Adolescents’ in its entirety.

Poly Styrene has been credited with influencing a number of other artists, including Gossip’s Beth Ditto, who said of the singer: “[She was] so ahead of her time. She recreated punk. X-ray Spex, a band that shaped my identity."
