Ed Drewett - Album Sampler (5 Track Review)

Many of you may already be familiar with the Essex born singer songwriter Ed Drewett for many reasons. Most people would have heard his vocals on the Professor Green hit ‘I Need You Tonight’ where he lent his voice to the chorus.

The more music savvy may know that he was an accomplished songwriter before emerging as an artist in his own right, penning hits for boy-band of the moment The Wanted with ‘All Time Low’ reaching number one. You may have recently heard his debut track ‘Champagne Lemonade’ which features on this album sampler which gives us a taste of what is to come and we have every reason to be excited.

ImageEd hails from Bishop Stortford and his Essex charm oozes through his song writing and his vocals. The album is set for a Spring release and it has seen him collaborate with an accomplished set of producers and writers with Greg Kurstin (Lilly Allen), Cutfather (Kylie Minogue, Christina Aguilera) and Fraser T. Smith (Cheryl Cole, JLS) all contributing to the album.

The first song from the album sampler is ‘Parrallels’ and is a great start to the EP. It was co-written with Wayne Hector (JLS, Britney) and has every ingredient needed for a pop hit. The catchy chorus is hypnotic with Mr Drewett’s vocals and will be entrenched within your brain throughout the day but doesn’t have that annoying element that many pop songs do, you tend to enjoy the chorus buzzing through your brain instead of trying to get rid of it. The track centres around the idea that you only have one life so while you have it, enjoy it which is such an uplifting concept as many pop tracks tend to be dreary and more depressing, life isn’t all bad!

The next track is entitled ‘Vital Signs’ and is clearly about a very head-strong girl that Ed has encountered in the past. It displays very clever song writing giving us a sign of his ability to tell a story within his lyrics backed up by a very radio friendly beat which would be welcomed on any radio station across the nation. More than anything it shows that this album is going to be rammed with massive pop hits that will not escape your memory in an instance.

Track 3 is the ballad which best shows off the Essex lad’s vocals. ‘Better Days’ was written after awaking from a nap and he claims that it is the best track he has ever written. I think that this is near enough on the money as the lyrics show the raw talent that he possesses when it comes to song writing which compliment the vocal performance perfectly.

‘Champagne Lemonade’ is the debut single and is an electro-pop track that has received major plays on major radio stations such as radio 1. The track is all about how a girl chooses to go for the ‘champagne’ lifestyle rather than his ‘lemonade’ lifestyle which in turn highlights the Essex wit and charm that he has in abundance. The production sees the pop hit infused with a electro/dubstep influence creating a very interesting sound which has potential to appeal to any audience whether it be the mainstream or the underground scene.

The final track sees the personal highlight for me with song ‘Keep Me In Mind’ and it has number 1 hit written all over it. The chorus is one of the best that I have heard throughout the year with the lyrics having meaning but the melody is what makes the song so great. After my first listen I was able to recite most of the chorus which for a pop song, is perfect. The track is about a girl that Drewett is clearly mad about and any girl would love to have this song about them with promises of money and shoes being bought for them in exchange for the love and affection towards Mr Drewett, something many young ladies dream about. Overall, this is just a great pop song with radio hit written all over it. If this was released as a single, it could earmark Ed as a definite heavyweight amongst the charts.

This young man of 23 has a great future and a great 2011 in store. The album sampler gives us a taste of what is to come and my mouth is watering at the prospect of more catchy riffs and lyrics being cemented into my brain. This is one of the catchiest EP’s I have heard in my musical lifetime but it has a charm that makes it credible and not irritating in any way. Ed Drewett is a big talent and is definitely one to watch in 2011.
