Sudanese War Child Releases 'We Want Peace' Ahead Of Referendum

Former Sudanese child soldier, political advocate and hip-hop recording artist, Emmanuel Jal, is driving a political awareness campaign leading up to the Sudanese referendum on January 9th 2011, with support from George Clooney, Alicia Keys, Kofi Annan, Peter Gabriel and Richard Branson. The single ‘We Want Peace’ is released digitally this week.

Emmanuel Jal is encouraging people around the world to visit the official website (www.we-want-peace.com) to become peace soldiers by signing an awareness petition that will call for a timely, free, and fair referendum in Southern Sudan.

‘We Want Peace’ is available to download from the official website and all major online retailers. “The main objective," says Jal, "is for supporters from around the world to visit the official ‘We Want Peace’ website and sign up to become peace soldiers.”

On January 9th 2011, the citizens of Southern Sudan and Abyei, as promised by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, will participate in a referendum that will determine the fate of Sudan. Hailed as a significant date in the 2011 calendar, political analysts are citing the potential of the birth of a new African nation in the making.

"My country is on the brink of war," says Jal, "On January 9th, Southern Sudan will vote for its independence to be free from a government who has slaughtered and displaced our people for 43 years. The time to prevent genocide is now."

The 'We Want Peace' song includes string arrangements by Peter Gabriel, who recorded his part at Real World Studios in Bath. The promo video for the song, directed by Peter’s daughter, Anna Gabriel, includes cameo appearances from Alicia Keys, George Clooney, Peter Gabriel, Richard Branson, Kofi Annan and former US president, Jimmy Carter.
