Stereoboard Tour of the Week – The Airborne Toxic Event

Thursday, 17 February 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

There aren’t too many LA-based groups that choose to spend an entire month of their lives over here in the UK, playing a gig every single night just to entertain their British fans. In fact, it’s probably fair to say that we’d be lucky to have a week’s worth of gigs to pick from by one of our transatlantic friends. However, that is exactly what The Airborne Toxic Event did a few years ago. Back in November 2008, a few months ahead of the UK release of their eponymous debut album, the alt-rock five-piece were kind enough to grace us with their presence for the whole month. During their 30 Shows in 30 Days Tour, as it became known, the band travelled up and down the country, visiting all four corners of the UK and returning to London each week for a gig at Camden Town’s iconic Dublin Castle.

If you were unlucky enough to miss them at one of those performances or at any of their other shows since, you’ll no doubt be pleased to hear that The Airborne Toxic Event will be back this April. On this occasion, however, they’ll be limiting themselves to a modest ten dates in the UK, but they’ll be coinciding the tour with the release of their new album ‘All At Once’, which is due out on 18th April.

ImageThe Airborne Toxic Event were formed in Los Angeles in 2006 by the group’s frontman, fiction writer Mikel Jollett. In February 2009, the band released their self-titled debut, which reached Number 35 in the UK Albums Chart. They also experienced some Top 40 success with the album’s lead single ‘Sometime Around Midnight’, which got to Number 33. Later that year, the group performed at a number of the world’s largest music festivals, including T In The Park, Reading & Leeds and Oxegen. They also provided support for the likes of Razorlight and Kaiser Chiefs.

The Airborne Toxic Event will release their second album ‘All At Once’ on 18th April. The album will include the forthcoming singles ‘Numb’ and ‘Changing’. Starting this week, the band will be posting a live performance of each track from the album on their website. The April tour will include five dates in London, starting at an unconfirmed venue on the day of the album’s release. Fans will be able to buy “season tickets” for the four confirmed dates and the first fifty will be able to attend the album launch show. As part of the tour, The Airborne Toxic Event will be returning to the Dublin Castle for a gig on 19th April.
