Mona - Shooting The Moon (Single Review)

Nashville based rockers Mona have already got some pretty impressive support slots under their belts, not least playing with their mates Kings Of Leon on their recent arena tour in the UK. Already crowned at the MTV Awards with the Brand New for 2011 title, it seems that the only way is up for Nick, Vince, Zach and Jordan.

ImageWith their self-titled debut album released back in May, Mona are now ready to release their third single from that album, 'Shooting The Moon'. From the building intro and slight teasing of vocals up to the catchy guitar riff and huge drums, the song has a belter of a start. Nick Brown's voice, with it's juxtaposition of snarl and smooth is a perfect match for the rousing chorus and scuzzy guitars.

Nick Brown said himself of the song; "Shooting The Moon is about going for it. Regardless of if you should, or if some even think you can. It’s a song for the underdog, David facing Goliath". And what a battle it is. With various sounds bouncing off one another creating an impressive output, Mona certainly have gone for it with this song, particularly on the sure of itself, almost pleading chorus.

With a sound reminiscent of early Kings Of Leon, it's no surprise these bands have become such good friends. That genuine Southern sound is evident in 'Shooting The Moon' and with a chorus that sticks in your head long after the last note, it's an addictive song that represents the great sounds of Mona.

Although the song isn't exactly an epic classic just yet, it's obvious that the band have that potential for huge sing-a-long classics. No doubt their sets at Glastonbury, T in the Park and Oxegen went down a storm, and with slots at Reading and Leeds coming up in August, Mona are certain to get the crowd pumped up, with 'Shooting The Moon' playing it's part in their set list.

Mona certainly seem to be on the up, and it appears that their MTV award wasn't far wrong - 2011 looks to be their year. If they keep impressing their musical colleagues enough to nab these support slots, it won't be long until the fans catch onto that addiction themselves. Get involved people!

'Shooting The Moon' is available to buy and download from 18th July. Mona's self-titled debut album is available now.
