Stereoboard’s Top 10 Live Events in September

Wednesday, 31 August 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

With less than a handful of festivals left to go before the summer officially draws to a close, it’s time to start heading indoors to find the best live entertainment that the world of rock and pop has to offer. But there’s no need to fret – those summer nights may be nearing their end and the late-night open-air festivities may be going out with them, but there’s plenty of rock and roll-type fun still to be had. Just look at this small selection we’ve picked out for you from the coming month…

ADELE
Few people have managed to sell quite as many records as Adele has this year and it appears that even fewer have managed to sell as many tickets. Since releasing ‘21’, this year’s hugely-successful follow-up to her 2008 debut ‘19’, the album has gone 10x Platinum in the UK alone and has reached Number One in 10 countries, including the hard-to-crack US of A. It was, therefore, considerably unsurprising when the 23-year-old London-based singer managed to sell-out her entire UK tour within a short time of the dates first going on sale.

BESTIVAL
It may be one of the last outdoor events of the festival season, but the Isle of Wight’s Bestival is also one of the most appreciated. Despite probably being the lesser-known of the island’s two big festivals, it’s managed to earn itself a strong reputation as the more credible. After first attracting 10,000 punters at its debut seven years ago, Bestival has grown to welcome well over 50,000 ticketholders through its gates. Previous years have boasted a number of extremely impressive line-ups and 2011 in no exception. This year’s event will be headlined by Bjork, Pendulum and The Cure and will also see performances by the likes of DJ Shadow, Brian Wilson, Public Enemy and Primal Scream, who will be bringing their Screamadelica Tour to a close.

BIG TALK
While The Killers get to work on their fourth album, the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jnr. takes a short break from his main band this month to bring his new side project over to the UK for a few shows. In July, Vannucci released ‘Big Talk’, the debut album from his new band of the same name. Although the group – a collaboration between him and guitarist Taylor Milne – was intended as little more than a part-time venture, the album managed to receive a number of fairly favourable reviews in the press. It also featured the talents of former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp and The Killers’ touring keyboard player Ted Sablay. Vannucci will be bringing both the album and a full touring band with him for a trio of dates in the UK later in September.

THE BLUETONES
15 years on from the release of their chart-topping debut ‘Expecting to Fly’ – and, of course, its lead single, the Britpop classic ‘Slight Return’ – and The Bluetones will sadly be bringing their all too brief but largely memorable career to a close. Choosing to end on a high, the band will be taking their old favourites on the road for one last spin around the country, before shutting up shop for good. With hits like ‘Bluetonic’, ‘Cut Some Rug’, ‘Marblehead Johnson’ and ‘Solomon Bites the Worm’ to choose from, there’s no reason not to catch these guys out on tour one last time.

DJ SHADOW
It’s been five years since Shadow’s last album - the somewhat controversial ‘The Outsider’ – and finally the influential DJ will be returning with his latest release ‘The Less You Know, The Better’ later this month. Firstly though, he’ll be popping over to the UK for a handful of live dates around the country, including a three-night residency at London’s Village Underground. Although fans were divided by the new direction he explored on 2006’s ‘The Outsider’, word on the street is that Shadow will be returning to his former glories for his latest offering. Either way, there’s little doubt that he’ll be dropping a few of his earlier favourites on the upcoming dates.

HARD-FI
It’s been just a few days since the new album from Staines’ massive Hard-Fi, ‘Killer Sounds’, entered the Top 10 of the UK Albums Charts and already it’s been impressing fans and critics alike. Although the album hasn’t yet managed to reach the dizzying chart-topping heights of its predecessors ‘Stars of CCTV’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’, ‘Killer Sounds’ is already beginning to show signs of being one of the group’s most killer releases. Now, Hard-Fi are getting ready to take the album out on the road for a full tour of the UK in September.

JOHN GRANT
Having delighted people with his debut solo album ‘Queen of Denmark’ and subsequently winning Mojo Magazine’s Album of 2010, former Czars frontman John Grant is now about to embark on yet more live dates around the UK. This month, in addition to his own solo shows and festival appearances, including End of the Road and the aforementioned Bestival, John will be appearing at London’s Royal Festival Hall alongside indie rockers Midlake – his collaborators on ‘Queen of Denmark’. Definitely not to be missed.

PETE DOHERTY
Although that full Libertines reunion tour has yet to occur and is looking less and less likely to, Pete seems to be doing a pretty good job of impressing people on his own merits and making a good go of it himself since recently getting out of prison for the second time. There doesn’t yet appear to be any new solo material in the pipeline but, if his recent performances at Reading and Leeds are anything to go by, you’re more than likely to hear a selection of favourites from his Libertines and Babyshambles days at one of the upcoming shows.

PUBLIC ENEMY
A few years back, New York hip-hop legends Public Enemy brought their 1988 classic ‘It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back’ over to the UK for their British fans to hear in all its live glory. This time around, Chuck D, Flavor Flav and co will be doing a run-though of its follow up ‘Fear of a Black Planet’ on their upcoming UK dates. Fight the power!

THE WOMBATS
Earlier this year, ‘This Modern Glitch’, the new album from Liverpudlian indie rockers The Wombats crashed into the UK Albums Chart at Number 3. The band’s second offering subsequently received a great reaction from both fans and critics and proved to be an admirable follow-up to their 2007 debut ‘A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation’. This month, you’ll be able to hear songs from the new album, plus earlier favourites like ‘Moving to New York’ and ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’ as the band head out on tour.
