The Monday Club - Magic Picture/Shake Me (Single Review)

If you tried, you could name three or possibly four bands that come from Sheffield and that is not because the city does not produce great musicians, it is simply more well known for its past. However, that could all change on the 4th November when The Monday Club release their new double-A side single. Ok Maybe it won’t, but it should do because this brilliant double-A side, which comprises of the ‘Magic Picture’ and ‘Shake Me’, is a very welcome alternative to electronic twaddle that is available today.

If you are looking for a statement of intent from a song then the lead single, ‘Magic Picture’, would be very hard to beat. From the initial howling, reverberating guitars and Paul's vocals, this song clearly sets outs The Monday Club’s determination to make every record sound like you’re hearing it live at a gig.

The second song ‘Shake Me’ starts with a simple if jangly guitar part, before the drums kick in. This song sounds a little bluesy and whiney to me, although it does have menacing air lurking beneath the surface and it has a very nice guitar solo courtesy of lead guitarist/singer Paul.

In all, the music this fabulous band is producing is very reminiscent to early Oasis material but don’t let that deter you. The unpretentious four-piece work hard and constantly face an arduous struggle to make their music heard by a wider audience. So it is great to hear this uncompromising quartet go about doing what they do best, which is to make really great and ‘live’ sounding guitar music in a world where extravagant, synthesised and artificial pop is in the ascendancy.

The band are appearing at the O2 Academy in Sheffield on the 4th November for the launch of this fantastic single and I would urge you to go see them live!
