Poly Styrene Track to be Released in Aid of Somali Refugee Appeal

A new remix of a track from the late Poly Styrene’s last album ‘Generation Indigo’ is to be released next month in aid of a Somali refugee appeal. Future Noise Music recently launched a competition to find the best remix of Poly’s song ‘No Rockefeller’, which is due for release on 4th December via digital download.

The winning remix, by Wass N Burls, was picked by producer Youth, who worked with Poly Styrene on ‘Generation Indigo’. Youth – aka Martin Glover – is probably known best for being the bass player in legendary post-punkers Killing Joke as well as a renowned record producer, who worked on The Verve’s ‘Urban Hymns’ among many other notable albums.

The Wass N Burls remix of ‘No Rockefeller’ will be released on 4th December, with all proceeds going to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) for their Somali campaign. More than 1.4 million people are internally displaced in Somalia and over 600,000 Somalis live as refugees in neighbouring countries. After Afghanistan and Iraq, Somalia is the third largest refugee-producing country in the world.

‘No Rockefeller’ is available to pre-order from iTunes. It will also include non-album track ‘Black Christmas’ and a remix by Kahn. To find out more about the refugee appeal, visit the UNHCR website.

Poly Styrene died in April of this year following a battle with cancer. The album ‘Generation Indigo’ – her first in seven years – had been released a month before. Poly was probably known best for being the lead vocalist in X-Ray Spex, one of the defining bands of the late ‘70s London punk era.
