Stereoboard Tour of the Week - Steel Panther

One-half heavy metal band and one-half Carry On film, LA’s Steel Panther have never been a group that like to do things lightly, as their latest album ‘Balls Out’ has recently shown. As fans will no doubt have noticed, this tongue-in-cheek glam rock quartet display the most extreme levels of absurdity and excess in everything they do – whether its applying inordinate amounts of hairspray, going completely over the top with their make-up or simply writing some of the most pant-wettingly distasteful lyrics you’re ever likely to come across.

Sounds like your cup of tea? Good, because the band have just announced that they’ll be returning to the UK for a headlining tour in March and that they’ll be bringing their hilariously hard-rocking new album with them.

Funnily enough, the LA rockers are currently midway through their latest trip to these shores with two of their own heroes, Def Leppard and Motley Crue, after previously name-checking both bands in their debut single ‘Death to All but Metal’. Of course, many people will first remember Steel Panther for that very song, when its accompanying video became a YouTube favourite back in 2009. The band soon followed the song’s success with a performance at our very own Download Festival, just days after the release of their first album ‘Feel the Steel’. Despite being a relatively new band at the time, Steel Panther still managed to pack the tent out, forcing latecomers onto their tiptoes for a measly glimpse from outside.

When speaking about the band’s current tour, guitarist Satchel was as upfront about his excitement as you may have come to expect from Steel Panther: “Getting the tour with Def Leppard and Motley Crüe is the best thing that's happened to Steel Panther since we got the Viagra endorsement - we're hard already.” And after hearing their new album ‘Balls Out’, with song titles like ‘17 Girls in a Row’ and ‘It Won’t Suck Itself’, we’re sure you wouldn’t expect anything less.

When Stereoboard’s Heather McDaid spoke with Satchel’s bandmate Stix Zadinia in a recent interview, the drummer was similarly candid: “I’m a regular guy, I just happen to rock extra hard. I think people don’t always get how awesome that is for me. It’s like, ‘Fuck, man, that’s so gnarly. How do you live that kind of life?’ I’m just like you. I just happen to be proud to wear spandex.”

So, if you’re considering heading down to one of Steel Panther’s UK dates next March and you’re wondering what to expect – expect nothing less than complete and utter ridiculousness. That, plus big laughs, shameless guitar solos, questionable dress sense and lots and lots of naughty words. Or maybe we should just leave it to Stix Zadinia to explain: “We are quite simply the best heavy metal band that you have ever or will ever hear. We’re just that good. Just be ready. If you don’t prepare yourself properly, then you will explode.”

Steel Panther’s second album ‘Balls Out’ is out now.

The band are currently on tour in the UK with Def Leppard and Motley Crue – see below for remaining dates and tickets.
