Tall Ships - Hit The Floor (Single Review)

Brighton based trio Tall Ships have gone from strength to strength since the release of their EP ‘There Is Nothing But Chemistry Here’ last year and in Hit the Floor they have produced yet another energetic bundle of experimental indie brilliance.

ImageTitle track Hit the Floor is a track that the band described as being about a night out clubbing in one of those big commercial clubs, and I can tell you if I heard this track when I was out the experience would be much more enjoyable! Opening with a swift hi-hat cymbal burst, abrasive guitar riffs soon interject as the now recognisable guitar loops kick in to give the song a pop-punk kind of feel. As the early cymbal burst is replaced by some thunderous percussion to drive the song, distorted shouts of “Heeeeeyyy!” bring in vocals of Ric Phethean as the muffled tones continue to direct the song in this explosive direction.

After two choruses of distorted vocals and thrashing guitars a change in sound which will be familiar to fans of Tall Ships music occurs. What is left from this breakdown feels like a sparring match between the drums of Jamie Bush and the guitar and bass work of Ric Phethean and Matt Parker respectively. Layers of guitar try and force the drums onto the back foot before the crashing cymbals regain control and as this battle powers on a cry of distorted vocals interrupts resulting in all elements of the track coming together for one raucous and frenetic finale.

B-Side ‘Safe as Houses’ has a slightly different feel to it, similar to earlier Tall Ships tracks like ‘Vessels’ and ‘Ode to Ancestors’ the sound of broken keys followed by a simple guitar and drum tune that is free from the experimental looping that Tall Ships are renowned for. With a slow melodic start, this has a feel of a mini ballad about it, coming in at just over two minutes; the track floats around nicely and has a feel of reflectiveness about it.

A really good single release here and with ‘Hit the Floor’ you have a song that captures all the glory and energy of their fantastic live set, which once again proves that these guys are well and truly on their way to bigger and better things in 2012.
