Patti Smith Pens Winehouse Track

American singer-songwriter Patti Smith has revealed that she has penned a song about late soul singer Any Winehouse, as well as 70’s actress Maria Schneider.

Image65 year-old Smith, who last released an album in 2007 with ‘Twelve’, wrote a poem about Winehouse after learning of her death in a New York studio. After her friend and bass-player wrote a jam to the poem, Smith decided to put the arrangement together as a song – though its unknown whether it’ll be seeing the light of day anytime soon.

Smith told magazine Uncut: “The little song for Amy just blossomed in the studio. We were at [New York studio] Electric Lady doing a whole other song and I wrote Amy a little poem when she died and my bass player, Tony Shanahan, wrote a piece of music and the two matched perfectly.”

She continued on to talk about the track written for Maria Schneider, who died in February last year. “We wrote a very nice little song for Amy Winehouse, and I think a beautiful song for Maria Schneider, the actress who was a friend of mine in the '70s. They just happened, like gifts.”
