There’s probably a number of fans who could tell you every detail of Beyoncé’s life, from how much she weighs to how old she was when her first album came out. But now, you can actually get a diploma for it – as Beyoncé is now a subject of a course studied in a New Jersey university.
The new course, known as ‘politicising Beyoncé’, is taught by lecturer and PH.D student Kevin Allred, and involves comparing the superstar’s lyrics and videos to a number of other pieces of work, including feminist Sojourner Truth and Alice Walker.
Rutgers University reads: “…the performer’s music and career are used as lenses to explore American race, gender, and sexual politics. Allred pairs Beyonce’s music videos and lyrics with readings from the Black feminist canon. Course topics include the extent of Beyonce’s control over her own aesthetic, whether her often half-naked body is empowered or stereotypical, and her more racy performances as her alter ego, 'Sasha Fierce'.”
If that wasn’t enough, in classes they even bring in other singers like Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, and Adele. At least it’s not David Beckham studies.
