Bombay Bicycle Club - How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep (Single Review)

London based quartet Bombay Bicycle Club haven't exactly had an amazing track history with single releases. Charting in the region of 50 and lower, it's obvious that this isn't where their fan base is getting their music fix from the band. Luckily, Bombay Bicycle Club have released a steady stream of fantastic albums to quench the indie thirst.

Debut 'I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose' steadily grew to be an amazing introduction to the band, full of fantastic hit after hit. 'Flaws' saw the band take a different direction in its acoustic sound, but just proving again how talented they are; Jack Steadman's vocals and song writing ability helping them to stand out amongst their peers. Last year saw Bombay Bicycle Club release their third long player, 'A Different Kind Of Fix', gaining their highest chart position with the album debuting at No. 6.

'How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep' is the fourth single to be taken from the critically-acclaimed album, and is another track that encapsulates the band's sound. A chilled intro leading you into a "head nodder" of a beat, Jack's haunting vocals create a repetitive hook over the layered sounds that have become staple in Bombay Bicycle Club's music.

The animated video that accompanies the song (which took 6 months to make!) is as visually charming and subtle as the song is to listen to, and provides a perfect accompaniment to the happy, smiley, and typically summery feel of a Bombay Bicycle Club song. At exactly 3 minutes and 30 seconds , 'How Can You......' appears even shorter, and the repetitive vocals make it almost feel like there isn't much substance to the song, but the more you listen, the more the song drags you in, and quite frankly puts a smile on your face.

Bombay Bicycle Club took a different step with 'Flaws', but the current album, and this song in particular, is the band back to their debut best. They're pretty easy to fall in love with, and the more you listen to this song, it's easy to understand why.

With NME nominations for the 2012 awards, and an April tour coming up, including a sell out show at 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace, it looks like 2012 may just be the year that Bombay Bicycle Club finally get the recognition they deserve. British at its indie best!
