Tony Bennett Reiterates Calls To Legalise All Drugs

American pop, jazz and show-tune singer Tony Bennett has reiterated his statement in which he called for all drugs to be legalised, following the death of friend and collaborator Amy Winehouse and superstar singer Whitney Houston.

Bennett originally made the claim during a pre-Grammy’s party on Saturday night after hearing that Whitney Houston, who was a notorious drug user, had died. According to the Rolling Stone, he received mostly positive reaction from the crowd, with Bennett telling the magazine that legalisation “would get rid of all the gangsters that make people hide. One thing I've learned about young people, when you say 'Don't do this,' that's the one thing they're going to try and do. Once it's legal and everybody can do it, there is no longer the desire to do something that nobody else can do.”

Bennett continued on to reference Amsterdam as an example of drug legalisation working, saying: “I witnessed that in Amsterdam. It's legal, and as a result there's no panic in the streets. There's no deals, there's no 'Meet me at the corner and I'll give you something.' You're always afraid you're going to get arrested. You have to hide. Why do that?”

The news comes after Richard Branson’s recent appearance in Parliament in order to advise them to legalise drugs.
