Cold Specks – the solo project of Canadian singer-songwriter Al Spx – have announced the release of their debut album ‘I Predict A Graceful Expulsion’, which is due out on 21st May. It will be preceded by lead single ‘Blank Maps’. Cold Specks will be embarking on a tour of the UK later this week – see below for dates. The video for the band’s previous single ‘Holland’ is also available to watch below.
Speaking about her recent move to the UK, London-based Spx said: “Jim [Anderson, manager] convinced me to fly out and work on the record for a few months. That was a year-and-a-half ago. I guess I’m permanently based here now. I didn’t know anyone when I moved here. We needed musicians and Jim knew a bunch. Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey’s regular collaborator) has been helping out with some arrangements and percussion and Jim’s old friends Pete Roberts (guitar), Thomas Greene (piano) and Tom Havelock (cello) also play on the record.”
The name Cold Specks is taken from a line in James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’: “Born all in the dark wormy earth, cold specks of fire, evil, lights shining in the darkness.”
Their new single ‘Blank Maps’ is due for release on 14th May.
