The Monkees Singer Davy Jones Dies Aged 66

Manchester's Davy Jones, singer in the hugely-popular 1960's US band The Monkees, has died. He was 66 years old.

The singer's publicist Deborah Robicheau confirmed the news Wednesday morning, 29th February, that Davy Jones (pictured right) had died in Florida after suffering from a major heart attack.

Famous for the clean-cut image, The Monkees also included Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork. They formed in 1966 and, following a successful television series, were famous for songs such as 'Daydream Believer' and 'I'm A Believer'. Having scored nine Top Forty hits, they were regarded as the American “version” of The Beatles. Three of the original Monkees, Jones, Dolenz and Tork, reunited last year to play a handful of reunion concerts.

An official from Florida Medical Examiners Office confirmed that they received a call from Martin Memorial Hospital informing them that Jones had passed away. A witness told authorities he was with Jones in Indiantown, Florida, when Jones "began to complain of not feeling well and having trouble breathing," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Davy Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters.
