2012 NME Award Winners Announced

The annual NME Award ceremony took place at the Brixton O2 Academy, prior to its television showing on Channel 4 on Saturday evening, and saw a glitzy array of stars turn up to watch the best bands and artists from Britain pick up gongs – with Noel Gallagher picking up the ‘Godlike Genius’ award for his contribution to music.

Leicester rockers Kasabian managed to pick up the award for Best British Band, with frontman Justin Young telling the crowd that he was happy that “entertainment was just as important as progression in rock ‘n’ roll” had been recognised as a fact,” whilst US rock icons the Foo Fighters were named as the Best International Band.

The Best Album And Best Single awards went to The Horrors’ ‘Skying’ and Florence and the Machine’s ‘Shake It Out’ respectively, whilst The Vaccines and the Arctic Monkeys received accolades for Best New Band and Best Live Band correspondingly.

An interesting part of the award ceremony are the ‘negative’ gongs, which saw Justin Bieber pick up ‘Villain of the Year’ and ‘Worst Album of the Year’ (for ‘Under the Mistletoe’) just a day before his 18th birthday (which is today) and One Direction claim the ‘Worst Band of the Year’ award.
