Napster Found Predicts That Spotify Will Overtake iTunes 'In Under Two Years'

Sean Parker, founder of infamous file-sharing site Napster, has claimed that music streaming service Spotify will ‘over take iTunes’ within two years.

Spotify has spiralled upwards in growth since it came about in 2006, changing from a simply streaming service to a subscription-based, international company, with founder Daniel Ek aiming to change the whole business of music streaming completely. And Parker, who cofounded the resurrected Napster, belives that if they continue to grow, they’ll over take the biggest company in the game – iTunes.

“If Spotify continues growing at its current rate in terms of subscribers and users,” Parker told VH1, “we will overtake iTunes in terms of the amount of revenue we contribute to the music labels in under two years. The iTunes store, to this day, is so slow. I'm amazed.”

Recently, Spotify owner Daniel Ek claimed that the music industry was entering a ‘golden age’ – where more and more people will listen to and buy music.

He told Grammy: “We look at the sharing of music as really, really important for our business. We've found that the more social our users are, the faster they grow their own music library. And the faster they grow their music library, the faster they become paying customers. Personally speaking, I am more bullish on the future of the music industry than ever before, and I think we're kind of entering a golden age in music.”
