InMe - Fibbers, York - 10th March 2012 (Live Review)

I made my feelings on InMe clear in my recent review of their fifth full-length album, 'The Pride'. Yet, amongst my mix of apathy and grudging admiration there remained a question. InMe have something of a reputation as a band that can impress on the live circuit. Indeed their live performances can be credited for their mini-resurgence in recent times. On a tour as wide-ranging as this one though, there are a mammoth thirty-five dates, it seems surprising that they can pull a fairly substantial (by York standards at least) crowd into Fibbers this evening. At least half of those gathered near the stage appear to be InMe die-hards and one cannot help but wonder how many shows they will attend on a large scale tour such as this.

ImageIf they do attend more than one night then one can only hope they watch Mojo Fury (small pic) every night as well. Getting better each time they grab yet another notable support slot, the Northern Irish upstarts only need to a few more quality tunes to push themselves firmly into the ascendancy. They should be headlining venues this size in the not too distant future themselves.

Still, by the time InMe arrive the crowd seems fairly warmed up. New tracks aplenty from 'The Pride' are received equally as passionately as back catalogue cuts like 'Underdose' and '7 Weeks'. The amount of crowd members who appear to know every intricacy, and every word, of this band’s songs is impressive considering the fact that there only about 150 people in the venue altogether. There may be the occasional strangled shout for 'Firefly' or 'So You Know' but frontman Dave McPherson is an expert at putting any hecklers down and the band look like they are genuinely enjoying their set, even if McPherson looks a little bemused at his guitar tech’s insistence that he swap SGs between what seems like every single song.

What stops this being a truly great show though is that, despite the dedication present in their fans and despite the fact that they are a solid live act, InMe just don’t have the material that makes a band a genuine live behemoth. For diehard fans and those just looking for a casual mosh InMe are a fantastic band to go and see, I’ll grant them that. For everyone else however, there really isn’t that much to write home about.

InMe’s 'The Pride' and Mojo Fury’s 'Visiting Hours of a Travelling Circus' are out now.
