Ohio rockers The Black Keys have backtracked on their comments regarding Nickelback, in which they blamed the Canadian quartet for ‘rock n’ roll dying’, with Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach apologising (or as close to an apology as you’ll see) to the band.
Carney originally told The Rolling Stone: “Rock and roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world. So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be shit – therefore you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world.
"Fuck that. Rock and roll is the music I feel the most passionately about, and I don’t like to see it ruined and spoon-fed down our throats in this watered-down, post-grunge crap, horrendous shit.”
Now, a guilty conscience seems to have been playing with the pair, and they’ve told MTV that they didn’t entirely mean what they said – though they did find manage to take another dig at the ‘Rockstar’ singers’.
“I didn't mean to single them out, it just came out,” Carney said. “There's much worse bands than Nickelback... maybe. That was the worst apology.”
The pair of performers then burst out laughing, with Dan Auerbach telling Carney: “Good job dude.” You can watch the interview in the video below.
