Breathe Carolina Talk To Stereoboard About Their Success So Far & What's Up Next (Interview)

Denver’s Breathe Carolina - David Schmitt and Kyle Even – are enjoying continued success with their third full-length studio album 'Hell Is What You Make It' as the first single 'Blackout' climbed to Number Eighteen on the US Top 40 Chart and was certified gold last month.

Image'Hell Is What You Make It' is only the latest chapter in Breathe Carolina’s story. Schmitt and Even started making music together in 2007 after their earlier bands broke-up and they found themselves housemates in the suburbs of Denver. After setting up a MySpace page and gaining a bit of notoriety, they signed to Rise Records to release their debut album 'It’s Classy, Not Classic' in September 2008. This led to a year of non-stop touring and a new deal with Fearless Records for their sophomore album 'Hello Fascination.h' in 2009.

You can check out Stereoboard's review of 'Hell Is What You Make It' here, the band also took five minutes to fire through a quick Stereoboard interview below.

What’s been going on in the Breathe Carolina camp so far in 2012?

We’ve been recording in LA during January and February. Then we did SXSW in Austin,TX and now we are co-headlining a tour with The Ready Set.

With your latest record having been out a good while now, how did you find the overall response to it?

Its been chill, 'Blackout' is about to go platinum in the USA and we are very excited for as many people as possible to hear our music.

Why did you decide to release ‘Blackout’ with a variety of remixes? Do you enjoy hearing how people can work with your music in different ways?

Yea we actually had a remix contest so our fans submitted their versions which was great!

What do you find to be the best and worst parts of being able to tour?

It can be good and bad, but it’s the life we live.

Considering your musical roots – with the band being a digital fairytale story of sorts – how do you find being on the cover of the likes of Alternative Press?

Well that’s the scene we came from, people that we looked up to have been on the cover and we are proud to be apart of that.

With achievements as huge as this, do you ever look back at the journey you’ve taken with Breathe Carolina?

Always, we are just trying to do this as long as we can.

With the likes of dubstep dominating music nowadays, how do you feel about that as a musical style? Is it something you’d consider experimenting with fully in future?

Not fully but we enjoy just as much as anything else. We leave that to the people that can perfect it.

With there being a recent explosion over the issue of downloading and torrenting, what do you – as a musician – make of the whole situation? What do you find the positives/negatives?

Its something that no one can control so why worry about it, just sit back and enjoy the music.

Since forming the band, have you found any big changes in the industry throughout your time as a part of it?

Oh yea! Just even being a part of it is crazy and being able to be around to see the changes.

What would you say are your personal favourite moments or greatest achievements through the band to date?

Well being able to play main stage on warped tour coming up is definitely an achievement for us. As well as the success of black out is an awesome memory.

Is there anything in particular left you’d like to achieve through music?

Longevity is our main goal or aspiration. We love doing what we do!

Overall, how would you say 2011 stood for the band?

2011 was a crazy ride for us, playing all the shows and travelling was great.

What do you hope 2012 holds for Breathe Carolina?

Well we have a new single coming out that we are very proud of and want to share that with everyone. We just want to go everywhere and have a good time.

What do you have planned for 2012 that fans should watch out for?

Touring and crazier shows than you would expect from us!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Come and hang out with us when we come through your town!
