Gotye Admits He's A "Bit Sick" Of Hit Single 'Somebody That I Used To Know'

Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter Gotye has confessed that his huge-selling international hit ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ has started getting on his nerves – saying that he ‘does wonder how many times you can listen to the same piece of music’.

Gotye, a.k.a 31 year-old Wouter De Backer, has release three studio albums in his 11 year career, but it was his recent single ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ that catapulted him into the limelight, with the single hitting #1 in the US, the UK and a range of other countries all over the world – it’s even gone 9x platinum in his native Australia. But, while De Backer owes a lot to the track, he’s now admitted he’s actually a ‘bit sick’ of it!

“Sometimes I feel like I'm a bit sick of it,” he told NME. “My inbox, on any given day, has at least five covers or parodies or remixes of it and there's only so many times you can listen to the one song. I like the fact that people are still discovering it and I don't feel like it's a noose around my neck, but at the same time, I do wonder how many times you can listen to the same piece of music.”

He continued: “I can't think of any song that's ever been picked up like this and I do feel like saying to people sometimes 'Come on guys, there are other songs out there'. It had an energy that wasn't like anything I've put out before. I don't really feel like it belongs to me anymore. Everybody else kind of owns it now, especially with there being so many cover versions and parodies.”
