High Court Calls For UK ISPs To Block The Pirate Bay

Things are looking pretty grim for pirates of the UK (internet pirates, not village-pillaging pirates) today – as it appears that a bunch of Britain's best Internet Service Providers have been ordered by the High Court to block access to leading peer-to-peer file sharing site The Pirate Bay within the coming weeks.

The site has been subject to huge amounts of controversy in recent years, and has been taken down countless times – with the site's owners all in trouble with police at one point or another. Many countries have banned the site, and it looks like Britain may be the next on the list – with ISPs including Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin, O2 and Everything Everywhere all apparently receiving orders to stop their users getting on to the site.

Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), has said: “The High Court has confirmed that The Pirate Bay infringes copyright on a massive scale. Its operators line their pockets by commercially exploiting music and other creative works without paying a penny to the people who created them. This is wrong - musicians, sound engineers and video editors deserve to be paid for their work just like everyone else.”

He continued: “Sites like The Pirate Bay destroy jobs in the UK and undermine investment in new British artists. We urge anyone using The Pirate Bay to explore the many digital music services operating ethically and legally in the UK – especially those carrying the Music Matters trustmark.”

The move was ordered by Mr Justice Arnold, who originally decided that The Pirate Bay and its users were infringing the copyright of music companies back in February.
