Rap star Nas has opened up about his new album ‘Life is Good’ - and revealed that he sees it as a ‘renaissance’ of 90s hip-hop, and sees him returning to his roots.
The new record is his first solo album since 2008’s ‘Untitled’ (he did have a compilation album with Damian Marley in 2010), but rather than modernise and change his style, he’s returned to his roots and gone back to the 90s - where hip-hop was rife and - life was good.
“My new album is just about feeling life and not letting anything get in the way of living life,” Nas told Digital Spy. “The only thing that got in the way of the album is how music sounds today. It's the perfect time for me to do the music that is true to my early '90s roots and make it appealing today. I just let it flow.
“The sound came back naturally to me in my case because I was part of the '90s rap renaissance. I went back to that era back in my head and went back to producers from that time as well as ones who are only just starting out.”
He continued: “It's up to this generation and the next to decide what they want to listen to. I have a different take on today's charts compared to the younger crowd and I don't let appealing to them bother me anymore. I spoke a bit about it on my ‘Hip-Hop is Dead’ album, but I'm past that now and I'm inspired again.”
