Don Broco - Priorities (Album Review)

Finding bands who are quality live and on disc is often more difficult than you'd think. Don Broco are a force to be reckoned with in a live capacity, and though there was nothing wrong with their previous releases - their new record 'Priorities' is set to catapult their on-disc quality to dizzying heights. Taking more time and paying more attention to the intricacies of their work has paid off, big time.

ImageOpening title-track 'Priorities' kicks things off with a tenacious guitar riff, launching into a high-paced, catchy verse. It's not assaulting, but it's big and lures you in wholeheartedly to this release. The chorus itself is purely addictive, lavish in quality. There neat guitar flaunts of harmonics throughout the verse give it a little quirk here and there, and the lyrics "I miss you pumpkin" stand out immediately, so much so it's the singular lyric that's been jammed internally since a first listen.

Most albums possess a string of good tracks with one or two stand outs, but their diversion from this generalisation is what makes this album surpass expectations: it's overrun with massive tracks. 'Yeah, Man' focuses more on a drumming undertone, as opposed to the guitar heavy openers, yet the bridge is soaring. 'Fancy Dress' is more assaulting in its introduction, explosive before returning to the Don Broco template for the verse. Don't be fooled into thinking the term template means the record is repetitive, because each track stands out on their own accord. The band have a certain style that lends to the verses being more subdued compared to more explosive choruses or interludes, and this is a fine example. The chorus here is massive, the biggest on the record by far.

'Whole Truth' is the best song by far, a true highlight nestled in an album of high quality. It's speedy harmonics lay base to a faster verse before the bridge soars discreetly towards the catchiest chorus of the lot. The hooks are addictive, the Don Broco swing is ever-present but it's just bigger, better and tighter.

Across the board, this is a fantastic album, so much so it's hard to find a low point. The band have honed their skills as songwriters and musicians and that's evident in this release. Musically, each factor is given its moment, working together to then create a mass of strong songs. It's simply infectious and this is likely to open many, many doors for the band. Fantastic, completely fantastic.

Don Broco’s 'Priorities' album is out now on Search And Destroy Records, Sony Music.
