Band of the moment, pop-punk rockers Green Day brought this weekend's Reading Festival to a frenzy earlier today, Saturday 25th August, with a (not so) secret performance on the NME/Radio 1 Stage.
Green Day had long been rumoured to perform at this weekend's festival and were thought to be playing their 1994 album 'Dookie' in its entirety. The unannounced set began at 11am, shortly after frontman Billie Joe Armstrong officially confirmed the appearance on his Twitter page - just 45 minutes before he and his band took to the stage. Billie Joe tweeted: "Green day - READING FESTIVAL CONFIRMED!! On stage in 45 minutes! In the NME / RADIO 1 tent. 11am!! Be there!"
The demand to see Green Day perform the intimate gig was huge. So huge in fact that festival organisers were forced to introduce additional crowd-control measures, for health and safety reasons, that saw access to the stage sealed off. Those festival-goers who were too slow in making it to the stage were left to watch the band on the Main Stage's big screens.
Although expected to perform 'Dookie', Green Day delivered only 5 tracks from the album. The set spanned the band's entire career.
The entire set, which was just over an hour, included 13 songs, with classics 'Basket Case', 'Minority' and 'Brain Stew' all being performed. The trio concluded the performance with 'She' from the album 'Dookie'.
Reading Festival continues over the weekend with headline sets from Kasabian and Foo Fighters tonight and tomorrow respectively.
