Mampi Swift Announces Charge Records' 'The History' LP Sampler Release Date

Known as the king of the double drop, drum and bass legend Mampi Swift was one of the biggest stars and slickest DJs in the game back in his hey-day (hence the name!), but has been rather quiet in recent years. Well, we’d say he’s been rather quiet, but his neighbours would say otherwise - because he’s been in his studio smashing out new tracks for the hugely-anticipated ‘The History’ LP that’s getting a release later this year.

Coming via his own Charge Recordings label, the new album is a compilation of tracks from old skool and new skool producers, and the sampler - out September 17th - is an exciting preview of what’s to come from the record. Featuring staple names like Gridlok and, of course, Mampi Swift, considerably less seasoned producers Breeze and Modulate, and the talented NC-17 and Mr Explicit, you get an eclectic mix of drum and bass throughout just four tracks.

Mampi’s track ‘Gangster’ has been physically destroying soundsystems and dancefloors (and Bailey’s 1xtra show) since Bailey gave it it’s first play earlier this summer - and it’s probably going to continue to do so until the end of time. Combining dramatic, rave-influenced synths, bass thumps reminiscent of hardcore/techno, breakneck percussion and - of course - a sample from a badass film (this time it’s Goodfellas), Swift’s created the ultimate rave/drum and bass crossover, and its deservedly getting rinsed across the country.

While Mampi’s new tune could be considered a modernisation of Mampi’s classic sound, NC-17 and Mr Explicit travelled back in time for their track ‘Class of 1999’, and have put together what could easily be mistaken for a classic from the yesteryears of drum and bass. Deep, dark, and rolling, the track’s pounding yet super-simple bassline will have UKF fanboys quaking in their boots and scrambling for the dislike button.

Gridlok’s contribution is how you’d expect it; aggressive, dark as shit, and full of classic Gridlok percussion. Titled ‘Warriors Code’, the track also brings to mind some of the older names of drum and bass, such as Hive, Keaton, and Dom & Roland.

Old skool overdose, you say? Well, Breeze and Modulate’s track is a far cry from the other tracks on the sampler - entitled ‘It’s Over’, the song is a catchy piece of dancefloor drum and bass similar to the sound Hospital Records has been pioneering in the past couple of years. But, not limited to dancefloor business, the second drop features some of the ‘filthy’ bass wobbles that we’ve also seen explode recently, which could even see some of our lost UKF users come crawling back.

You can check out Bailey playing ‘Gangster’ - complete with the 100% necessary rewind - embedded below. The sampler hits shelves on September 17th, keep your eyes peeled for the full album release!
