Stereoboard Talk To Dan Le Sac About His Recently Released Solo Album 'Space Between The Words'

Ten minutes chatting to the pro producer, behemoth of beats and generally pleasant guy to talk to, Daniel Stephens a.k.a. Dan le Sac. Dan is mainly known for his work as half of Dan le Sac V. Scroobius Pip, the guy who makes the music for Pip to put words to but has now (well as of the ninth of July this year) released a solo album. We started off talking about the album 'Space Between The Words'.

ImageThere’s been a lot of talk about influences with comparisons made with the XX and Massive Attack what do you think the influences have been?
To be honest everything in my entire life... I don’t really get the XX comparison, not that I have anything against the XX they're just not as much of an influence as Portishead, Joy Division, New Order but no-one seems to mention them (Breathe easy, they just have).

You’ve collaborated with a lot of cool people on this album, you brought Merz out of retirement?
Na he had an album out this year he’s been doing stuff.

Is there anyone you might like to collaborate with on the next album who you didn’t get on this one?
I don’t know really, I haven’t even started thinking ... It would be great to get someone like PJ Harvey, Thom Yorke but all the guys off this album they're just, y’know you can sit in the pub and have a chat with them. But anyway that would be four years away.

You’ve put a timeframe on it, risky?
Well, yeah I mean this albums only just out and then I’ve got another album with Pip.

Neatly leads us on, are you hankering to get back with Pip for the third album?
Not really, we’ve not started writing yet, I mean we have some ideas but we’ve agreed that if in the end it’s shit we won’t release it.

And on your facebook page recently there were a lot of people saying Scroobius Pip should be solo but you both released a comment defending the DLS SP dynamic so are you guys still close?
We see each other and talk about the next record so it’s definately not a case of never again... And it’s weird the way folk talk on the internet. Like this guy - people say stuff they wouldn’t say in real life and without each other we wouldn’t be where we are.

Yeah he might still need someone a bit less pretentious
(laughs) Yeah.

So what has been your favourite live date so far?
Ah difficult question, it was pretty cool supporting Frank Turner at Wembley and then the tour of Japan was dope. I just enjoy touring as a whole, you don’t know what you’re going to get. But that does mean you’re sometimes playing to arseholes... but we let em know they’re arseholes.

You don’t play it up and say ‘You’re a wonderful audience’ to everyone?
Well maybe at the start of tours... we don’t call them all an arsehole, we just try and generate some buzz around the tours and then the crowds are better.

When you do the touring do you take the ol school tour bus? Or have you gone a bit plush and stay in hotels now?
Well what a lot of people don’t realise its cheaper to do the hotels cause a proper tour bus is pricey and there's normally only me, Pip and the sound guy y’know so we just Travelodge (other cheap hotel rooms are available).

QUICKFIRE

Curry or Stir fry
Stir fry

Cats or Dogs
Dogs

Why?
Eeerrghh (DLS informs me that this is the correct spelling, I would’ve said the noise he made was more 'uergh' but hey you can’t really argue with someone who plays with sound for a living)

Rock and Roll or Hip and Hop
Neither

How many roads must a man walk down?
42

How many Dan le Sacs does it take to screw in a light bulb?
Ah just use candles

After this we talked about Dan's currently under construction 'Loom of Cables' (I don't know if he is going to wear it or take over the world with it either) and the lack of any dates on his tour in Scotland (Mess up's with dates payments and distance). However he does have a tour around other bits of the UK and his album is out now!
