American Assembly Finds Pirates And File Sharers Actually Buy More Music Than Others

Pirating music, peer to peer (P2P) sharing, and torrenting are said to be the bane of the music industry nowadays, but a new study conducted by the American Assembly has suggested that modern day media pirates aren’t as bad for the scene as we may have imagined - as it appears they tend to buy 30% more music than those who don’t steal songs!

The study - which was undertaken by conducting countless telephone interviews within America and Germany - unsurprisingly found that file-sharers have a 37% bigger music collection than those who don’t share their songs (as well as that the average person has a 1,444 track collection). But, what they’ve also found is that those who share or pirate music also tend to end up buying around 30% more music than those who don’t - with the author writing that the ‘biggest music pirates are also the biggest spenders on recorded music’.

American Assembly's Joe Karaganis wrote: “Most of the difference comes from higher levels of ‘downloading for free’ and ‘copying from friends/family. Some of it also comes from significantly higher legal purchases of digital music than their non-P2P using peers–around 30% higher among US P2P users. Our data is quite clear on this point and lines up with numerous other studies: The biggest music pirates are also the biggest spenders on recorded music.”

The results echo studies that have suggested that pirates are the most passionate about music - though I doubt this will change many people’s opinions on them. What do you think of the study’’s findings? Let us know in the comment section below.
