The Vaccines Frontman Justin Young Defends Those Who Have Used X Factor To Find Fame

Justin Young - the frontman of London indie-rockers The Vaccines - has given his support to those who’ve found fame through the X Factor and similar reality talent contest shows, saying that they’re as valid route to the music industry as any other.
Young - who’s band have found massive success in the UK since forming in 2010 - compared the shows to 50’s and 60’s style variety contest shows, and said they’re as valid entry to the music scene as performing hundreds of gigs with a band in order to get noticed.
“I actually think the talent shows hark back to the '50s, '60s era of variety stuff,” he told BBC News. “I think they're the old fashioned way. People expect us to turn our noses up at these shows, but I think that for a lot of people it's the only opportunity they're going to get and I think it's as valid as going out playing show after show every night.”
The comments may come as a surprise to some, as it’s widely expected that those in guitar bands see the X Factor as a superficial way to become a star. It also contrasts comments made by Depeche Mode earlier in the month, which saw Martin Gore saying Simon Cowell should be shot. What do you think of the news?
