Utopia Music Line Up New Mikal Single 'Spiritual'/'The Chant'

Utopia Music are a label that never disappoint, and when one of their singles arrives in the inbox, the first thing I’ll do is switch off the porn and blaze it through my headphones - and the result is always as aurally pleasing as the other is visually. They’ve worked their magic once again with their latest release from Mikal, and it features two tracks that a lot of you drum and bass addicts have been screaming for.

The A-side, entitled ‘Spiritual’, will be a trip down memory lane for some listeners, and a refreshingly heavy experience for others. Mikal’s percussion has always been one of his fortes, and on this track, it’s no different - the drums are expertly crafted to fit right in with it's classic 90s sounding synths and deep jungle bassline. Mikal grew up around the sound of Goldie’s Metalheadz label, and the label’s influence can easily be found in this track - check it out below.

The flipside, Rido’s remix of Mikal’s ‘The Chant’, has been the subject of many a conversation in the dark dnb industry in the past month or two - even Utopia boss Mako bigged it up in our interview back in October. If you haven’t heard it yet, you’ll soon find out why - the original of the track was brilliant, and Rido has put his own expert touches on it, creating an epic alternative to the A-side.

Our personal favourite of the two, the track features an equally disjointed-yet-rolling array of percussion and a tribal vocal sample to accompany. The basses and bloops on ‘The Chant’ are ridiculous - there are donks and subs that cut through the speakers and a sweet industrial synth; one of those noises that makes you pull a bass-face of approval.

Out on Monday (February 18th) as both a vinyl record and a digital download, this release is sure to continue making waves upon release - no doubt you’ll be hearing it dropped at dances for the next couple of months. You can check out the tracks below - and remember, if you like it, buy it!
