'Dark Side Of The Moon' Designer Storm Thorgerson Passes Away Age 69

Friday, 19 April 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Storm Thorgerson - the man behind the now legendary ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ artwork, amongst many others - has passed away aged 69.

The graphic designer suffered a stroke in 2003, and although he recovered well, he was later diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer. After battling the illness for several years, he died peacefully yesterday with close friends and family at his side.

Thorgerson was a talented designer who’s worked in the music industry saw him creating artwork and illustrations for the likes of Led Zeppelin, Muse, Audioslave, Peter Gabriel, Anthrax, Genesis, The Offspring, Pendulum, and many more.

The band he worked most closely with, though, were Pink Floyd, with whom he was childhood friends. He was recruited as the band’s head graphic designer, and is responsible for pretty much all of their artwork - most notably the incredible ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ cover, which is now iconic.

A statement from his family reads:

“He had been ill for some time with cancer though he had made a remarkable recovery from his stroke in 2003. He is survived by his mother Vanji, his son Bill, his wife Barbie Antonis and her two children Adam and Georgia.”

Pink Floyd star David Gilmour also released a statement following his death, via his website - it reads:

“We first met in our early teens. We would gather at Sheep's Green, a spot by the river in Cambridge and Storm would always be there holding forth, making the most noise, bursting with ideas and enthusiasm. Nothing has ever really changed.

“He has been a constant force in my life, both at work and in private, a shoulder to cry on and a great friend. The artworks that he created for Pink Floyd from 1968 to the present day have been an inseparable part of our work.

“I will miss him.”

We at Stereoboard send our thoughts to his friends and family - RIP.
