Former WU LYF Members Talk About The Band's Split

Friday, 26 April 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

The former members of Manchester indie-rockers WU LYF have opened about the band’s split, which followed frontman Ellery Roberts posting a public video to YouTube informing his bandmates of his decision to walk away from them.

The mysterious Mancs were one of the country’s hottest underground outfits, and were supposedly working on a new album following their 2011 debut ‘Go Tell Fire to the Mountain’ - which hit #98 in the UK Albums chart.

But, in November last year, frontman Roberts wrote an open letter to his bandmates - accompanied by a YouTube video - declaring that ‘WU LYF is dead to me’, and that he was ‘gone. This isn't the end. This is the beginning.’

Now, Speaking to NME, drummer Joe Manning has opened about the band’s demise. He told the site:

“We all knew it wasn't working. There's no one explanation for it. There's a million reasons that don't amount to much more than it just didn't work. No-one is trying to cover anything up. If it doesn't work it's going to break eventually.”

He continued on to talk about Roberts specifically, and the letter he posted online.

“None of us knew that was going to happen before we read it on the internet…There's nothing cryptic in that message for me; it's personal, and I don't know why he had to do it like that.”

Manning - alongside fellow ex-WU LYF members Tom McClung and Evans Kati as well as three members of FAMY - have formed a new band known as Los Porcos. They performed their first gig last night - keep your eyes peeled for more info on them in the near future.
