New Blur Album And Future Gorillaz Material Rumoured

Monday, 24 June 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Comic designer and Gorillaz collaborator Jamie Hewlett may have answered the prayers of millions upon millions of music lovers by reportedly confirming that Britpop icons Blur will release a new album, and that there's Gorillaz material to come in the future too.

Hewlett is co-creator and and one-half of world-beating virtual music project Gorillaz, one he shares with Damon Albarn - who fronts Blur. The band last released an album in 2010 with ‘Plastic Beach’, but with both men having many other projects on their hands, there tends to be a large gap between records.

According to a fan who was at the launch event for the Gorillaz ‘Monkey’ opera, they’ll be releasing more music in the future. But not before Albarn and his Blur band mates put out a brand new studio record too.

A post on an unofficial Gorillaz fan-site says that the fan recorded Hewlett’s comments - and quotes him as saying:

“There's also a five years gap between the albums because they take a long time to do, and they're very exhausting and when you're finished you feel like you need to go do other stuff. So Damon's touring with Blur - hes doing a world tour with Blur at the moment and then they're working on a new album, so there isn't really time for him, and I'm doing other stuff as well. So I think we'll come back to it when the time's right.”

He continued on to talk about the hardships of running an animated band - though he added that there was ‘plenty of time’ to organise something.

“But also, the music industry's changed so much since we started doing Gorillaz. There's no money in the industry so you know you get these amazing new bands, like the Stripes from Ireland - 14 years-old, you know, the best rhythm blues guitarist you've ever seen. Age 14, make songs and film it in their bedroom. It doesn't cost anything, and so Gorillaz is kind of expensive. It's expensive to do because it's animated.”

Blur play their first gig in Ireland for four years on August 1, having lined-up a show in Dublin’s Irish Museum of Modern Art. If you want to catch the band - and see if they’ve got any new material to perform - check out the dates and links below to find a pair of tickets via Stereoboard.
