New And Underground: Stereoboard's 2000trees Setlist

Tuesday, 09 July 2013 Written by Sam Jones

This weekend 2000trees gets underway at Upcote Farm in Gloucestershire, with Frank Turner and Mystery Jets headlining a bill bristling with the finest the UK's alternative music scene has to offer.

With bands spread across four stages – from the 4,000 capacity Main Stage to the intimate confines of the Greenhouse – the festival has become a beacon for many music fans turned off by the season's behemoths.

The organisers promise good tunes, decent grub, environmental awareness and “the second best toilets at a UK festival”, so without further ado, here's who we're looking out for in this year's line-up.

Future Of The Left – The Cave, Thursday

Ferociously independent and committed to their craft, Future Of The Left rose from the ashes of the dearly-missed McLusky to become one of the most exciting rock 'n' roll bands in the UK. The Cardiff-based four piece released 'The Plot Against Common Sense', their third full-length, last year and recently followed it up with the 'Love Songs For Our Husbands' 7”. Go and see them.

Dry The River – Main Stage, Saturday

Led by the charismatic Peter Liddle, Dry The River play sprawling folk and released a mighty debut record, 'Shallow Bed', back in 2012. On that they were at times both gentle and grand, while in a live setting their compositions are beefed up and betray hints of their past as members of various hardcore and post-punk bands around the south of England. This could be a special show.

Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo – Leaf Lounge, Friday

A close friend and collaborator of Frank Turner, Barker and her band play wistful, country-infused folk. Their latest record, 'Dear River', is a mesmerising blend of mood and melody, carried along by Barker's arresting vocals. You can expect the same from her live show, with sumptuous harmonies adding another dimension to some great songs.

Gnarwolves – The Cave, Saturday

A bit of a change of pace, Gnarwolves are part of a budding punk scene in the UK at the moment. These “Cornish boys in Brighton” play songs that deserve to be screamed along to, having forged their reputation with several years of touring alongside bands like the Flatliners, Anti-Flag and Broadway Calls. Their 'Funemployed' 7” came out last month and is mighty fine.

The Crimea – Main Stage, Friday

This could be your last chance to see Davey Macmanus do his thing. The Crimea will call it a day following a show at London's Jazz Cafe on July 30, with their magnetic frontman set to open an orphanage in South Africa. Since the early days, when he fronted the Crocketts, Macmanus has been a fearsome live performer and with the band set to play material from their sign-off double album, 'Square Moon', this is a set not to be missed.
