Something For Everyone: The Stereoboard Latitude Setlist

Tuesday, 16 July 2013 Written by Heather McDaid

Latitude sells itself as more than just a music festival, and in 2013 it’s set to live up to that promise. Featuring acts and events to satisfy music fans, cinephiles, theatre lovers, poets, as well as big hitting comedy names including Sean Lock and Dylan Moran, this is a festival that prides itself on diversity and choice.

Amid a bustling line-up, which will be headlined by Bloc Party, Kraftwerk and Foals, there will always be some musical gems and here are a few of the bands set to stand out.

Drenge - iArena - Saturday July 20

Brothers Eoin and Rory Loveless have found their brand of garage rock widely celebrated after the release of their Bloodsports single and a series of festival slots. The excitement surrounding their recorded work was enough to put them on the map in the early days, but their live show is the follow-up factor that's set to keep them there. An exciting new prospect for guitar music, and definitely ones to watch. Just ask Labour MP Tom Watson.

Everything Everything - BBC Radio 6 Music Stage - Saturday July 20

Manchester-based Everything Everything have proven themselves a fearless band since their 2010 debut 'Man Alive'. Take one listen to their track Cough Cough and you will find a band capable of fierce harmonies, sci-fi nuances and a neat blend of genres. A real push for something different, the band have continued to blur boundaries on their sophomore effort - ‘Arc’ - and show no signs of slowing down.

Japandroids - iArena - Friday July 19

Japandroids prove that you don't need quantity for quality. Having recently toured in support of the Gaslight Anthem with just their drum kit and guitar, the pair create an exciting mesh of rock 'n' roll and punk with no fancy effects. An authentic musical experience, Japandroids are a celebration in the simplest form.

The 1975 - The Lake Stage - Sunday July 21

The 1975 encompass that big, soaring stadium sound. There is absolutely no difficulty in picturing the band dominating in a live setting, nor is there any issue in picturing the response. This Mancunian lot are tipped as one of the year's big guitar bands.

Mark Lanegan - BBC Radio 6 Music Stage - Saturday July 20

Bringing a welcome dose of alt-rock to proceedings, Mark Lanegan will play cuts from a storied career that spans over two decades. Now with a host of solo albums under his belt following his debut in 1990, not to mention his work as frontman of Screaming Trees, Latitude is set to play host to a moody rock 'n' roll show.

Swim Deep - The Lake Stage - Sunday July 21

Bold and brash they aren’t, but there's a quality nestled in Swim Deep's subtlety that's sure to charm anyone who catches their Latitude set. With a clear influence from the ‘90s indie scene, they settle for creating music perfect for a summer day, rather than tunes you'd crank up. They're just a nice band, and that's nothing but a compliment.

Texas - BBC Radio 6 Music Stage - Friday July 19

They are far from newbies, and 2013 marks the 25th anniversary of the Glasgow giants’ first live performance. A soundtrack to the '90s, Texas will recount a back catalogue of hits including the wonderful Say What You Want. Perhaps sold more on its nostalgic quality than anticipation of the band’s new material, it's still a set worth catching.

Jessie Ware - Obelisk Arena - Saturday July 20

A true success story, London's own Jessie Ware has moved from working as a backing singer to breaking through in her own right. In an industry saturated with big beats and attitude, Ware has a more stylish and light edge to her music. Running epitomises this difference, bringing a fresh twist on what feels like a classic throwback.

The Bots - iArena - Saturday July 20

Teenage brothers Mikaiah and Anaiah Lei make punk rock with grinding guitars and charging drums. With a tinge of the White Stripes and a dash of Rage Against The Machine, the potential for this band is exciting. Definitely a set for those seeking something a little more aggressive, but also with a sleek groove.

Veronica Falls - The Lake Stage - Saturday July 20

Veronica Falls take their cues from the indie and post-punk scene of the ‘80s and make the decade relevant by fusing their brand of pop bounce with the echo-drenched stylings of the era. Beachy Head proves their capability of shrouding a song in a fuzzy haze, and is a moody standout.
