Chas & Dave Return With First New Studio Album For 27 Years

Tuesday, 30 July 2013 Written by Jon Stickler

Since starting out in the early '60s as session musicians for the likes of Jerry Lee-Lewis and Gene Vincent, Chas and Dave have maintained their own inimitable musical style.

Now, the duo will mark their 50th year in music together with the October 28 release of a brand new studio album: 'That's What Happens'. Released under a new deal with Warner Music Entertainment, it represents their first new studio album for 27 years.

The album was recorded at the end of June in Studio 2, Abbey Road – “The Beatles Room” – with Grammy-winning bluesman Joe Henry (who has worked with Solomon Burke, Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt) on production duties. It sees Chas and Dave return to their roots with a collection of early R&B, skiffle and rock n’ roll classics, alongside new takes on songs of their own. Special guests on the album include guitarists Albert Lee and Martin Taylor, Buddy Holly and the Crickets’ drummer J. I Allison and on keys Jools Holland and Hugh Laurie.

Chas and Dave said: “This is one of the most enjoyable albums we've ever done. It was a great week in Abbey Road with top class musicians and Joe Henry at the helm. An unregimented atmosphere where the 'room' worked well alongside the microphone resulting in an album that ran so smooth and joyful that we've almost forgotten we did it. But we've got proof! It will be available for you all to enjoy really soon”.

Best remembered for hit singles including Ain’t No Pleasing You, Rabbit and Gertcha, Chas and Dave are also renowned for bringing long-forgotten music hall classics back to the public ear. But their musical journey now brings them right back to where it all started in the skiffle and early rock 'n' roll scene of a pre-Beatles London.

The duo have achieved three million album and single sales, landed six Top 20 hits, opened for Led Zeppelin and continue to play approximately 80 theatre-sized venues all over the country, every year.
