Birdy - Fire Within (Album Review)

Wednesday, 18 September 2013 Written by Katie Vowles

When we first met Birdy, or Jasmine van den Bogaerde, she was just 15 and had released a debut album packed with covers, including her breakthrough take on Bon Iver’s Skinny Love. Her outstanding voice had already been recognised by those in power, namely Radio 1, and she was duly thrust into the limelight.

‘Fire Within’ is Birdy’s sophomore album and with not one cover present, it’s a perfect showcase of her many talents. On her previous efforts, the arrangements have been restricted to slow, soft, piano-based tracks with ethereal vocals, but here she takes things up a notch. Intricate guitars take the lead on some tracks, while bold piano lines characterise others, adding extra impact when she does tackle stripped-back songs.

‘Fire Within’ shows that Birdy has matured and branched out, while still recognising what works for her. Light Me Up is a particularly catchy offering with a stand out hook and vocals that pack a punch rather than limply swimming behind the instrumentation.

Words As Weapons showcases her beautiful vocals, keeping them at the forefront of the mix, while the sunny Maybe lifts spirits instantly. On album closer Shine, Birdy’s voice is paired with harmonies to make the heart ache.

At points, the repetitive qualities of ‘Fire Within’ can wear, though. All You Never Say is just a little tedious and the same can be said for No Angel, which sees Birdy retreat to her comfort zone.

But, with multiple listens ‘Fire Within’ is a rewarding effort that reveals new moments of beauty each time. Birdy is an exceptionally talented musician, and in future a few more songwriting gambles could lead to something truly special.
