Former Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson will record a farewell album with the Who frontman Roger Daltrey.
Wilko announced earlier this year that he was suffering from pancreatic cancer, which was diagnosed as terminal. Not letting the illness keep him from doing what he loves, Wilko almost immediately lined-up a farewell tour, giving him the chance to say goodbye to fans who helped him become the icon he is today.
The 66-year-old played a series of emotional gigs through March, and despite being forced to cancel two final gigs - which were set to take place in his hometown of Canvey, Essex - due to ill health, Wilko is still battling on, and will be hitting the studio with Daltrey to work on what will be his last collection of music.
Johnson met Daltrey at an awards ceremony a few weeks ago. The pair clicked instantly and the idea for the album came pretty quick. Speaking to The Mirror, Johnson has promised it won’t be a morbid affair!
“They did tell me in January I’d be dead in October, but I may last into next year. I hope we’ll have something done before I go. There are a few more things I want to record. I wrote some songs right after getting this diagnosis.
"It won’t be morbid, though. I can’t have any truck with that. The music I want to continue to make, I think, generally should be a laugh not a cry. So there’s not going to be any cancer dirges.”
Johnson has also lined up two gigs at London’s KOKO for October 13 and 14. If you don’t want to miss out, check the dates and links below to find tickets through Stereoboard!
