Dave Grohl Claims Fans Should Forget Cobain's Death When Listening To 'In Utero'

Wednesday, 25 September 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Dave Grohl has commented on the band’s seminal album ‘In Utero’, stating that fans shouldn’t listen to it and think about Kurt Cobain’s death.

The legendary grunge outfit re-released the iconic album earlier this week, fresh with a ‘brand new’ track, the previously unheard Forgotten Tune, as well as a load of b-sides, compilation tracks, demos, and live gig recordings.

As well as being an incredible record, it’s also known for being Nirvana's last before the tragic suicide of frontman Kurt Cobain, and now, Grohl has spoken to Rolling Stone about the original album, claimingf that people should put that behind them when listening to it.

He told the site:

“The album should be listened to as it was the day it came out. That's my problem with the record. I used to like to listen to it. And I don't anymore, because of that. To me, if you listen to it without thinking of Kurt dying, you might get the original intention of the record.

"Like my kids. They know I was in Nirvana. They know Kurt was killed. I haven't told them that he killed himself. They're four and seven years old. So when they listen to 'In Utero', they'll have that fresh perspective – the original intention of the album, as a first-time listener. Someday they will learn what happened. And it'll change that. It did for me.”

Meanwhile, Grohl is working on a new album with his world-beating rock band Foo Fighters. Last month it was confirmed that he and the guys were rehearsing tracks for the new LP - you can check out our coverage of the story here.
