Pogues Guitarist Phil Chevron Dies Aged 56

Wednesday, 09 October 2013 Written by Huw Baines

Phil Chevron, guitarist of the Pogues, has died aged 56 following a long battle with cancer.

Chevron, real name Philip Ryan, joined the band in time to contribute to their classic 1985 record, 'Rum, Sodomy And The Lash', having earlier forged an influential footnote in Irish punk with the Radiators From Space. He wrote Thousands Are Sailing, one of the Pogues' most popular songs.

He was diagnosed with cancer of the head and neck in 1997, with an inoperable tumour returning in 2012. The band confirmed Chevron's death with a short note on their website, in which they reworked his own words to pay tribute:

We'd like to add our voices of sorrow to the many others in Irish and international music and theatre on the death of our friend, Philip Chevron, who died in Dublin today, aged 56. As was well known, Philip had been living with cancer for some time. He was unique. We'll miss him terribly. Dublin town, and the world, just got smaller.  His loved ones are in our thoughts.
