Tom Waits Performs First Gig In Five Years

Tuesday, 29 October 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Tom Waits played his first gig in five years last weekend as part of Neil Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit Concert.

The 63-year-old announced last month that he would be joining a lineup that also included Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Elvis Costello, My Morning Jacket, fun. and CSNY for the annual show, in aid of children with severe physical and speech impairments.

Performing with Waits were his son Casey, on drums, Les Claypool on bass, and David Hidalgo on guitar/accordion. He ripped through 10 tracks, ranging from material on his latest album ‘Bad as Me’ to older cuts like Come On Up to the House and Singapore. In a statement, he said:

"I had every good intention to stay home and work on my JD Salinger Halloween mask, but when Neil told me yesterday he was serving burnt cow's eyes on a flat tire and it's all gluten free, I invited myself!"
