James Blake on Mercury Prize Win: 'I've Got No Idea How I Was Nominated'

Thursday, 31 October 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Electronica star James Blake has revealed that he’s as surprised as anyone to have picked up the Mercury Prize.

Blake, and his latest LP ‘Overgrown’, beat favourite Laura Mvula and stiff competition from David Bowie, Disclosure and Arctic Monkeys to pick up the award, having lost out once before back in 2011 for his eponymous debut.

Speaking to Digital Spy following last night’s ceremony, Blake admitted he wasn’t expecting the win, and joked that he’d be spending his winnings on a crazy golf course for his garden.

“It felt different this year. It's less nerve-racking and much less daunting. I feel like I have the event a bit more sussed out. I've got no idea why the judges nominated my record. If I could tell you that I'd be able to write another one!

“I'm going to spend the money on a crazy golf course for my front garden. I'm not even a fan. The obstacles will be all the other artists in the competition just holding miniature golf clubs. Either way I'll be getting drunk tonight!”

Blake is already looking to the future too, telling the site that he’s hoping to make his next album ‘even better than this one’.
