Mindscape Talks 'Rat Pack' EP

Thursday, 19 December 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Hungary’s finest drum and bass export, Mindscape, has lined up a hefty new EP in ‘Rat Pack’, a collection that has been constantly on rotation since it landed in our inbox.

Featuring four fresh, heavyweight tracks, it’s one of the finest neurofunk releases of the year. We got in touch with the man himself to get an insight into what goes on in that mind(scape) of his - and there may be a cheeky competition running too...

For those of our readers that may not be as aware of you as we are, could you introduce yourself?

I'm ‘a mad scientist on the brink of insanity’ from Budapest, Hungary.

You’ve put together one of your strongest EPs yet with ‘Rat Pack’. What were you aiming to create when you started work on it? Are you pleased with it?

We've been planning a Mindscape EP on Eatbrain with Jade for a while. We are best friends since ages and I think his label is rising exponentially, so I wanted to make and give him my best tunes. I aimed to make four heavy dancefloor tunes, which fits the label's image. As I see the feedback in the clubs and on the net, people are pleased with it, so I am pleased with it too.

For the producers and geeks out there, tell us about your studio - what are your weapons of choice?

It's a very simple setup really, a pair of classic Mackie speakers - which is the most important thing in a studio - a midi keyboard, and a fast and quiet PC. I have an EMU sampler that Trace gave to me a few years ago, but I never really connected it into the system, so it's more like a DnB relic to me.

You’re currently working as a solo artist, but Mindscape previously ran as a three-man team. How have the past five or six years on your own compared to the first five or six as a trio?

We split up a long time ago, since then I've been working on music non stop, so i became more professional and more on point. I was a teamwork kinda guy previously, but now I enjoy producing alone, to do whatever I want without any compromises. I'm still open for collaborations with my friends anytime, because it's always fun to work with somebody with new ideas and a different perspective.

Your last full length album - ‘Martian Chronicles’ - hit shelves in 2012. Are there any plans for another LP in the pipeline?

First I'd like to make some singles and remixes for label and producer friends before I start to work on the next album. It took more than a year to collect the best tracks for Martian Chronicles, so I think you can expect a new album around the end of 14 or in 2015. I already have some plans for it though, but it's too early to reveal them.

We’ve just seen the Drum and Bass Arena Awards taking places, and while there were many worthy winners, there’s always some names that don’t get mentioned. Who are your picks for Best Producer and Best Track of the year?

I would have chosen Audio or Optiv & BTK as best producer and best track is Mythos, by InsideInfo & Mefjus. Honestly, some of this years DNBA results doesn't really match my taste, nonetheless big respect for all the winners!

What’s been your favourite track to drop in sets recently?

It was a strong year for DnB again so it's not easy to choose one exact track, but I really love this Prolix tune Here We Go Again, I'm playing it in every set since he sent it a few months ago and it still makes my head bang instantly.

You’ve also put together a mix together for our lucky ears - tell us about it!

I played some of my current favourites, some brand new dubs, and some tunes by myself that you have never heard before.

As you can see, Mindscape is strapped to the teeth with goodies for his fans and admirers, having put together a naughty mix for EatBrain featuring a truckload of tunes as well as his new EP. Speaking of goodies, we've got a competition for you too - if you want to get your hands on a vinyl copy of Mindscape's 'Rat Pack' EP, check the Like/Share comp on our Facebook page!
