Architects - Lost Forever // Lost Together (Album Review)

Thursday, 06 March 2014 Written by Alec Chillingworth

Architects have never really reaped the credit they deserve. Cut from the same cloth as Bring Me The Horizon, 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' might be the album to push them over the edge.

Gravedigger is, hands down, the best album opener of the year so far, fuelled by the unparalleled venom and vitriol with which vocalist Sam Carter delivers his lyrics. Listen to the man scream “you fucking parasite” over a crunching breakdown and tell me you're not scared he's going to leap from the speakers and scissor kick you in the bollocks. The chorus is an absolute winner and promises to be a staple in the band's live canon for years to come.

'Lost Forever // Lost Together' incorporates bits and bobs from across Architects' career to create something – watch out for Captain Cliché! - for everyone.

There are breakdowns aplenty for fans of the 'Hollow Crown' era and Broken Cross is certain to get arms flailing and pits a-goin'. The oh-so-simple chant on The Devil Is Near is tailor made, meanwhile, for audiences incapable of remembering words.

Even elements of their poorly-received fourth album, 'The Here And Now', get a look in. The melodic passage at the end of Castles In The Sky is one of the album's crowning moments, with a pained Carter adding a huge dollop of emotion and realism to proceedings. While many bands operating in similar territory mesh clean vocals and screams together awkwardly it's done with such ease here, notably on Colony Collapse.

Of course, if 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' was simply an outing in expertly-executed metalcore, it would be easy to dismiss. What makes it are the extremes the band goes to and the experimental flourishes that pop up throughout. The pulsing electronics, gloriously slick guitar melody and instrumental passages of Red Hypergiant are something you'd expect from an industrial band rather than Architects. But they've done it, and it's bloody fabulous.

This is by far the catchiest, angriest, most diverse full-length Architects have dared to release. Put simply, 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' kicks arse. At this early stage, it is a serious contender for British album of the year.
