Sky Ferreira - Night Time, My Time (Album Review)

Monday, 17 March 2014 Written by Gavin Rees

When navigating the noisy synth-pop of ‘Night Time, My Time’, it’s worth remembering that Sky Ferreira was snatched up by the industry machine in her mid-teens and added to the ‘next big thing’ conveyor belt.

This, her debut full-length, then, is a pretty stirring riposte to what was once expected of her, not to mention a pretty succinct ‘fuck you’ to the tabloids that have made her column-inch fodder and the internet trolls who have targeted her.

It’s far from perfect, but it does sketch out a picture of  Ferreira as someone with a pretty good idea of where her music will end up. ‘Night Time, My Time’ is an unashamed throwback to the goth pop of the ‘80s, with nods to Nine Inch Nails’ layered guitar scuzz and straight up synth jams chucked in for good measure.

Written and recorded with producers Ariel Rechtshaid and Justin Raisen, the album works from front to back, with Ferreira proving to be witty and biting at certain times, solemn and romantic at others.

If there are occasions, the chorus of You’re Not The One, sections of Nobody Asked Me (If I Was Okay), when her phrasing is awkward and the hooks don’t land, then there are other moments of pop joy to balance things out. Chief among them is 24 Hours, a sugar rush of a song propelled by fuzzy low end and an ebullient central melody.

Ferreira isn’t likely to disappear from the pop culture radar any time soon, but it’s clear that she’s someone who can look out for herself and use her position in the spotlight to fire some shots of her own. ‘Night Time, My Time’ could be the first chapter in a great story.
