The Roots Premiere When The People Cheer

Tuesday, 08 April 2014 Written by Huw Baines

The Roots have premiered When The People Cheer, a new song lifted from their forthcoming album, '...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin'.

The record is expected in May through Def Jam, with Black Thought confirming in a recent interview with Okayplayer that it's "conceptual" and revolves around a cast of characters. He said:

"It’s conceptual. It’s another concept album in the spirit of 'undun', but it’s not just about just one kind of character, we create quite a few different characters in this record. It’s satire, but in that satire it’s an analysis of some of the stereotypes perpetuated in–not only the hip-hop community, but in the community.”

The Roots released 'undun' back in 2011 and collaborated with Elvis Costello for last year's 'Wise Up Ghost'. In an Instagram post, ?uestlove announced a May 13 release in the US for its follow up. Check out When The People Cheer below.
